July 16, 1945 the first atomic bomb was detonated here. You can only visit this national historic site the first Saturday in April and October for a few hours. An exception was made on the 60th anniversary. On that historic date in 1945 the 100 foot test tower was vaporized and sand was turned to green glass called trinitite.
