The interesting thing about the world of the web is that there is so much to learn. What are some things you would like to see covered in future SIGs or even here on our site? I am open to any suggestions and apps used to make web sites from beginner to advanced.
Hi!
I want to learn how to incorporate a small video, say around 5GB or so, into a simple Web page; i.e., have it like a focus point of the page. Is that too large a file size? What's the norm for a person that just wants to add in a 'hello, and welcome to my site' sort of thing...? thanks!!
The rule of thumb to web design is to never have your home page (index) too crowded. Think of your index page as a first impressions page. Just like in real life, you don't want to overrun someone you just met with information or introduction or they may want to flee (hit the back button).
If your homepage is just a intro video, that would ok if short and sweet. 5GB is a bit much to try and stream to someone. Remember, a DVD disc is almost 5GB. Also be sure to allow the user to click play and avoid auto play if you are able. Most users don't like multimedia content that starts without them being ready for it.
As for the pictures, you may want to group them on another page and lead bread crumbs for the viewer to click and explore.
We can talk about good design and layout in the October meeting if you want.
