The helicopter pilots you refer to were Army? The Air Force used helicopters to search and rescue downed aircrews, often behind enemy lines. I'm referring to the Jolly Green Giants and the Super Jolly Green Giants of which I was a member in Da Nang, Viet Nam and Udorn, Thailand in 1969. My 37th Air Rescue and Recovery Squadron in Da Nang celebrated it's 500th rescue of the war a day before I rotated stateside. Very proud to have served with the Jolly Greens. Our motto, "That Others May Live."
Some of the Jolly Green helicopter training was at Eglin AFB Florida. Thanks for your comments Buck.

Fellow Veterans,
Sat. May 30, 2009, Mineral Wells, TX, The National Vietnam War Museum dedication of The Wall. Last Sat. was the unveiling of a permanent half scale of The Wall at The National Vietnam War Museum. The ceremony of the unveiling was honorable for those Brothers and Sisters who paid the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. Emotional and reverent by those who attended of the heros who have gone before us. If you have an opportunity to visit their site www.NationalVNWarMuseum.org and a drive to Mineral Wells - Hwy. 180 East of Fort Wolten. Two reasons it was selected for this area as Vietnam was a true helicopter war and Fort Wolten was the initial training for the helicopter pilots of Vietnam. I hope the museum will be completed before more of our Brothers and Sisters of Vietnam War die due complications of the war and age. Truly a worth while project The National Vietnam War Museum.

The state of Texas has new veteran license plates. Some are 100% free! You don't pay the $60+ to register your vehicle every year. I just received one and didn't pay a dime, but I'm told future years will cost me $1 for the window sticker. Go to the TX DOT website and look for Specialty plates. You have to meet different qualifications for each type. If you have trouble finding the webpage, let me know and I'll dig out my notes.

My first computer the ASN -24 is in the photos section now along with the C-141 it belongs to. The ASN-35 Doppler radar computer is also shown. These had no software as such. I am very proud to have served in the Air Force in Viet Nam even though I had to volunteer to go. I invite you to post your photos as well.

Martin,
Sorry, I wasn't trying to confuse, only communicate with Bill.
AN/ALR-62 and AN/ALQ-137 are: The specific type of electronic equipment. It is the equivalent of using G-4 or G-5 to describe an Apple computer.
ECM is: Electronic countermeasures, i.e., a type of technique to help defend an aircraft by defeating an enemy radar or heat-seeking missile, etc.
"I flew G's" is: A short phrase to tell Bill Fritz that I flew a B-52G rather than a B-52D model at the island of Guam in the Pacific during that timeframe.
HQ USAF is: Headquarters, United States Air Force, i.e., the Pentagon.
VCSAF is: Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, the second highest ranking officer in the USAF.
LB II is: Linebacker 11, the military name given to the Dec 1972 Christmas bombing of North Vietnam, particularly Hanoi and Haiphong.

To Misters [!] Pavelko and Fritz: Could you do a brief translation into basic English for us non-technical folks? Thanks - Martin

Bill,
Yes but please don't hold me to this as the only thing I really remember is: "push forward to make the houses get bigger, pull back to make the houses get smaller." I'm pretty sure we had the AN/ALR-62 and AN/ALQ-137 gear.
You're right about the ECM computers, they were either on or off and they either worked or they didn't. I firmly believed that speed was life!
Were you in the Strategic Division or Tactical Division at HQ USAF? I had a pentagon tour and was Deputy Chief for the Strategic Division and Chief of the Strategic Forces Division before moving to VCSAF's office.
Please let me know when you're going to use the LB II movie at the SIG, I'd like to sit in on it. I flew G's out of Guam during LB II.
Thanks,
Bob
