Our next FCP Sig will be held on Saturday, June the 13th at 9 AM at the Richardson Civic Center. The main ACD meeting will start at 10 AM. There will not be any of the 10 AM Sigs due to a rather lengthy movie about the Macintosh that will presented at the main meeting. An announcement to follow from John Jones. I have a short tutorial on "Edit to the Beat in Final Cut Pro" to present at the FCP Sig at 9 AM.

AppleInsider article
Final Cut Studio 3.0, Final Cut Server update in Apple's pipeline

By Sam Oliver

Apple in recent weeks has reached out to members of its professional video editing communities to help test a couple of updates to its Final Cut suite of video production tools: one major and one incremental.

The first is Final Cut Studio 3.0, the Cupertino-based firm's second major overhaul to its professional video and audio production suite for Mac OS X bundling component applications Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack, DVD Studio Pro, Color, and Compressor.

Although earlier rumors had pegged the software for release in early spring, the suite -- code named "Sideways" -- is still undergoing beta and compatibility tests with Snow Leopard, the company's next-gen operating system believed to be integral to a wide variety of professional application upgrades still under development at Apple and likely to arrive after the OS's summer release.

While details are few and far between, AppleInsider has been able to confirm that recent distributions of Sideways are members of the 30A1xx build train and weigh in just shy of 3 gigabytes.

Separately, Apple has also been evaluating an update to Final Cut Server code named "Dingo." Details surrounding this update are similarly vague, but its focus is believed to be incremental support for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard among other tweaks. Unlike Studio, however, its milestone markers suggest the update will arrive as a point release to the current edition of Final Cut Server and not represent a completely new offering.

AppleInsider previously reported on in-progress updates to a handful of Final Cut Studio's component applications, namely Motion (changes unknown) Color 1.5 (Snow Leopard compatibility) and ProRes Codec (unknown). It's unclear whether these updates will precede Final Cut Studio 3.0 as updates to Final Cut Studio 2.0, or come bundled with 3.0.

LoveSong the Dru Richmond band featuring Dianne Dawson is now on Vimeo HD. Production credits include Steve Streeter, yours truly and the legendary Don Smith. Final Cut Studio and Soundtrack Pro were used to edit video and audio.
Dru's Mac Pismo is the band.

The following is an article from TDL the Digital Lifestyle

Could Apple Have an NAB Trick Up Its Sleeve?

This week marks the NAB Show in Las Vegas. In the past, Apple has used the event to demo updates to Final Cut, DVD Studio, Color, Motion, etc. This year Apple is sitting out the event, without a booth on the exhibit floor. But does that mean they don't have a surprise in store?

The current Final Cut Studio suite is full of what seems like all the tools a video editor/DVD author/ effects person could want. Of course it seemed that way before they even added Color, which was quite a jaw dropper. And FCS 2 has been out for two years now, beyond the traditional update cycle for the software. As a matter of fact, there's been an update or addition to the pro video apps every year since 2001, except for 2008.

Maybe Snow Leopard is holding up the delay of a new addition. Or maybe, just maybe, we're closer to seeing a new version than we think. All the way back to 2006 there was talk of a rumored suite codenamed "Phenomenon" which would resemble today's suite, but include the functionality of Shake, Apple's high-end (and largely un-updated) compositing software. At the time, the software was expected in 2008. Overdue, or abandoned? We might know by the end of the week...

I'll post a note to the FCP group that Major leads and see if there's interest.
So many things coming and sooooo little money!

Don, are you expecting Final Cut Studio 3 this week (NAB Convention) as I am? I'm hoping it will take advantage of all the cores our processors have and all the ram we have. We have waited a long time for this as well as Blu-ray capability. Hope my wish comes true. I have put aside the cash to purchase as soon as it is announced. My debit card is burning for this as well as the overdue Aperture upgrade. I think Apple will upgrade all Pro apps to take advantage of more than 4Gb of ram and more than one core (64 bit). I expect Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) in August and 10.5.7 by the end of this month (April 2009). At the office I am upgrading Creatives to 10.5 and CS4. Incidentally if you want to see what Photoshop CS5 might look like look no further than After Effects CS4 which lets you allocate equal amounts of ram to each core. We have many good things to look forward to coming our way. Maybe Taylor can share what he has learned about Raid using SATA etc. Don, I wonder if the Compressor articles would be news to the FCP users group that Major is part of.

Thanks to Ed for sending me a link to spark the flame for doing this..

I've been able to speed up Compressor rendering by FOUR TIMES!

It involves tricking your Mac so that Compressor thinks it's farming out the video to three different computers. Here's the initial article that spurred my experimentation:

You may have to flesh out the idea by doing a Google search for Compressor Virtual Cluster for more details on how to set up QMaster prefs. This is for 4-core or 8-core Intel Macs. I have a 4-Core. One "gotcha" is that you have to export your movie out of FCP as a reference (or self-contained) movie, and then bring that movie into Compressor. No joy if you try to export to Compressor directly out of FCP. Finally, look at this:

I've been looking on the web at the Black Magic Intensity-Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card that has component video breakout for analog. Anyone heard of it? $330

I have an ElGato EyeTV that I use to capture standard def TV from my uVerse DVR, but I would prefer to capture component for HD. What inexpensive video card or USB device is out there to capture component in a window for video watching. All I really want to do is watch on it on my computer.. the DVR will be doing the recording. By the way, I now have my 30" monitor... so running 3 monitors off my computer now, which sure is nice. Unfortunately, I gave up on Apple for monitors and got the Dell 3008 because it is brighter, higher contrast, faster response, and many more inputs. Oh yeah... its $300 cheaper. Oh well, Apple will probably come out with something better at NAB.
